"Have a good day"????
How do you feel about store cashiers telling you, "Have a good day"?
Do you feel all warm and fuzzy and glad that a total stranger cares so
much about your welfare that they are expressing a sincere wish for your happiness
for the next 24 hours? OR do you feel that the automatic statement made by
a robotic voice while sometimes not even looking at you has lost sincerity
and has become a bit jaded? Granted it is better to have someone say, "Have a good day" as opposed to some of the things you hear in public but let me give you an example of when "Have a good day" wasn't so good as you all know, my brother-in-law died recently, at my sister's house the phone rang and my sister answered and the conversation went like this: Hello, VOICE: "May I speak to Dennis Zaffino?" MY SISTER: "He has passed away". VOICE: May I speak to whoever is handling his estate?" MY SISTER: "I am his wife, who is this?" VOICE: "This is about a hospital bill." MY SISTER:"Can this be discussed at another time, we are
leaving for the funeral.?" Voice: "Ok, HAVE A GOOD DAY!"
See what I mean? The phrase has lost it's punch, it has been said so automatically that sometimes I feel like saying, "Yeah, whatever"
Have you ever visited a convenience store late at night and at the end of the transaction, the cashier says, "Have a good day!" and you want to say, "I'll try to,
the whole 13 minutes that's left of it!" OR do these good wishes extend for a full 24 hours? By then I can be back at another store for my daily blessing. I have had a LOT of good days and I probably have all those well-wishing cashiers and clerks to thank and should stop sounding like a curmudgeon, so I will go now
and I wish you all a good day! (And I mean it!)
